Awards 2006

In 2005 we launched an innovative awards scheme to develop the potential of individuals campaigning for social change. On 27 March 2006 we held an awards ceremony in Central London to announce the nominees and winners. Five out of six of the winners were women campaigners suggesting women are at the forefront of the next generation of campaigners.

Our Patron, Rt Hon Gordon Brown MP, Prime Minister spoke alongside Lord David Puttnam and Director of Liberty, Shami Chakrabarti at the event.

'Out of adversity, comes the opportunity to do something about [our] concerns. With passion and reason, carefully calibrated in balance, in coalition with other like-minded people, the opportunities, I think, are huge'.

Shami Chakrabarti

The awards represent a major investment in the next generation of campaigners in the UK. Award winners received a tailored package of support that will enhance their campaigning potential, such as training, coaching and mentoring from experienced campaigners. The shortlisted candidates for each of the award categories who did not win awards will nonetheless receive support from the Foundation. Throughout 2006 SMK helped these campaigners identify potential opportunities to further develop their initiatives.
